Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is designed to help health and social care professionals develop greater understanding, confidence and practical awareness when supporting autistic people and people with a learning disability.
At MDG Health Consult Ltd, we are proud to be working in partnership with approved Oliver McGowan Facilitators and Experts by Lived Experience across the country to offer Tier 1 and Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training (OMMT) on Learning Disability and Autism, the government's standardised and recommended training package for all health and social care staff.
Why Oliver McGowan training matters
People with learning disabilities and autistic people may experience healthcare and social care differently.
Professionals need the knowledge and confidence to communicate effectively, understand individual needs and provide appropriate, person-centred support.
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training helps professionals develop greater awareness of learning disability and autism and helps ensure staff feel informed, confident, and supported in delivering compassionate, respectful care.
The training is the government's preferred and recommended package for supporting CQC-registered Adult Social Care providers to meet the relevant learning disability and autism training requirement.
Course prerequisites
Before you can progress into Tier 1 or Tier 2 Training, it is essential that you complete the Tier 1 (Part 1) eLearning. This module should usually take around 90 minutes to complete.
This training can be completed via NHS England's eLearning for Healthcare (e-LfH) platform. Once you have completed this, you can book onto either the Tier 1 or Tier 2 training depending on your requirements.
Should you require any assistance booking your eLearning module, contact a member of our team for assistance.

FAQ
What's the difference between Tier 1 and Tier 2 training?
Tier 1 is designed for staff who require a general awareness of autistic people and people with a learning disability — it's a live 1-hour interactive online session plus Q&A. Tier 2 is a full-day, face-to-face workshop for staff who provide direct care and support, offering deeper, practical learning. Not sure which applies to your role? Contact our advisors and we'll help you check.
Do I need to complete anything before attending Tier 1 or Tier 2?
Yes. All delegates must first complete the Oliver McGowan Tier 1 (Part 1) eLearning module via NHS England's eLearning for Healthcare (e-LfH) platform — this takes around 90 minutes. You cannot attend either the Tier 1 live session or Tier 2 workshop until this is done.
How long is my Oliver McGowan certificate valid for?
Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training should be retaken at least every three years, as per the official Code of Practice, or sooner if your role or responsibilities change significantly.
Can I claim LDSS funding after I've already booked or completed training?
Yes, but don't delay. Reimbursement is claimed after training is completed, and funding is ring-fenced with limited availability — we recommend submitting your claim promptly once your team has finished their session.
What happens if a delegate misses the Part 1 eLearning before a booked session?
They won't be able to join the live Tier 1 session or Tier 2 workshop that day. We'd recommend completing the eLearning as early as possible after booking to avoid losing your place — get in touch if you need help accessing it.
Who delivers the training?
MDG Health Consult Ltd delivers the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training in partnership with an NHS England-approved training provider. In line with the national standard, every session is led by an approved Oliver McGowan trainer and co-delivered with Experts by Lived Experience. MDG coordinates booking, logistics and quality on your behalf.
Will I receive a certificate?
Yes. Upon successful completion you'll receive an official certificate, issued by our approved training partner once all required elements are completed.
